Programme Cover for Anything Goes

John's Professional Stage Debut

Prince Edward Theatre, London

3 October 1989 to 28 April 1990

Role: Billy Crocker

In 1989, John took a break from college in the States to study Shakespeare in the UK. It was while visiting relatives in Scotland that he heard about an open casting call for the show Anything Goes, which he'd seen a few weeks previously in London with his parents.

The producers were looking for a young man who could sing, dance and do an American accent. John auditioned...and was offered the part less than 48 hours later.

Elaine Paige was one of the producers and stars of the show and remains a dear and important person to John. After all, it was the "First Lady of British Theatre" who gave John his first major break in the West End.
