Torchwood: Miracle Day - 2011

After catapulting to prominence in just five episodes of the revitalized Doctor Who in 2005, John and his character, Captain Jack, were given their own series, Torchwood, in 2006.

As described by its creator and head writer, Russell T Davies, "Torchwood is a British sci-fi paranoid thriller, a cop show with a sense of humour.

"It's dark, wild and sexy, it's the X Files meets This Life. It's a stand-alone series for adult audiences which will have its own unique identity."

The first series aired on BBC3 in 2006 and gained the highest ratings of any programme previously shown on a digital channel. Series 2 in 2008 was moved to the mainstream channel BBC2 in recognition of its success. The third series, Children of Earth, was conceived as a five part mini-series and was further promoted from BBC2 to BBC1. Airing over five consecutive nights on BBC1 between 6 and 10 July 2009, the show garnered excellent ratings as well as critical and public acclaim.

Torchwood won Best Drama Series at the BAFTA Cymru awards in 2007.

The fourth series, Torchwood: Miracle Day, was a co-production between the BBC and the US Starz Network and was broadcast on the Starz network in the US and on BBC1 from July 2011.

Torchwood lives on in a series of audio dramas from Big Finish, available online at:

Captain Jack will also be back in the form of a Torchwood comic book series, written by John and his sister and co-author, Carole E Barrowman. The series will be launched by Titan Comics on 6 July.

Torchwood at San Diego Comic Con 2011

John was joined by Eve Myles, Bill Pullman, Mekhi Phifer, Alexa Havins and writer Jane Espenson for a standing-room-only Q&A at San Diego Comic Con on 22 July 2011. John also introduced the other members of the cast at a screening of Episode 3 of Miracle Day on 21 July and represented Torchwood at a special "Supernaturals" panel on 23 July hosted by TV Guide.
